What We Believe

Goldston Baptist Church affirms the Baptist Faith and Message (2000). Specifically, we believe…

The Bible – The Bible, both Old and New Testaments, to be the inspired, inerrant, eternal word of God. It is the supreme standard of faith and conduct for all mankind. Isaiah 40:8; John 17:17; 1 Thessalonians 2:13; 2 Timothy 3:16

God – There is only one God, Almighty Creator of heaven and earth. We believe in the Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, each having distinct, personal, divine attributes without division of nature, essence or being. Genesis 1:1; Deuteronomy 6:4; John 17:11; 2Corinthians 13:14

Jesus – Jesus, the eternal Son of God, took on flesh, being born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, was crucified as payment for sin, died, was buried and raised to life on the third day. He ascended to heaven and will one day return for us and reign supreme over all the earth. Psalm 2:7; Zechariah 14:9; Luke 1:35; John 1:1-18; 10:30; Acts 1:9; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; 2 Corinthians 5:21

Holy Spirit – The Holy Spirit indwells the believer at the moment of conversion. His ministry is to guide, instruct and empower believers for godly living and service. John 14:16-17; 15:26; 16:7-14; Acts 10:44; Romans 8:26-27; 1 Corinthians 3:16;12:3-11

Satan – Satan is a fallen angel, enemy of God and man who has been defeated through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Isaiah 14:12-21; Luke 10:18; Hebrews 2:14; 1 John 3:8

Man – Man is created in the image of God, male and female, originally without sin but in the exercise of his will he chose to sin and all mankind has since been born sinners and subsequently die for their sin. Genesis 1:26-30; 3; Romans 3:10-18,23; 5:6,12,19

Salvation – Salvation involves the redemption of the whole man and is offered freely to all who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, who by His own blood obtained eternal redemption for the believer. In its broadest sense salvation includes regeneration, justification, sanctification, and glorification. There is no salvation apart from personal faith in Jesus Christ as Lord. John 3:3-21,36; Acts 4:12; Romans 3:23-25; 8:1-18,29-39; 10:9-10,13; 2 Corinthians 5:17-20; Titus 2:11-14

The Church – Jesus is the head of the church which is His body and comprised of all who are born again. The local church is an autonomous congregation of baptized believers, associated by covenant in faith and fellowship of the gospel. Its biblical leaders are pastors and deacons. While both men and women are gifted for service in the church, the offices of pastor and deacon are limited to qualified men. Matthew 16:15-19; Acts 2:41-42; 1 Corinthians 12:27; Ephesians 1:22-23; 4:11; 5:22-2-32; 1 Timothy 3:1-15

Baptism and the Lord’s Supper – Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water as a declaration of his faith in Christ. It is commanded by Jesus for everyone who has been born again. The Lord’s Supper is a symbolic observance for the church to remember the Lord Jesus’ death until He returns. It is to be partaken only by believers after self-examination and confession and repentance if necessary. Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 2:38; 8:34-39; 1 Corinthians 11:23-32

Last things – According to His promise Jesus Christ will return personally and visibly in glory to the earth; the dead will be raised, and Christ will judge all men in righteousness. The unsaved dead will be judged for their deeds and cast into hell. The righteous in Christ will dwell forever in heaven with the Lord. John 14:1-3; Acts 1:7-11; Romans 14:10; 1 Thessalonians 4:14-18; Revelation 20:1-22:13

Gender, marriage and sex – God has created each person as male or female. These two distinct genders together reflect the image and nature of God. Rejection of one’s biological sex is a rejection of the image of God within that person. The term “marriage” has only one meaning: the uniting of one man and one woman in a single exclusive union and God intends sexual intimacy to occur only between a man and a woman married to each other. Genesis 1:26-28; 2:24; Matthew 19:3-6; 1 Corinthians 6:9; Hebrews 13:4
